Diversity Institute Kickoff

The CIRTL Diversity Institute was launched with the Diversity Institute Kickoff, August 17-18, 2004 , at the University of Wisconsin . Faculty members in post-secondary science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and diversity experts from across the country came together to discuss the current situation with regard to diversity in STEM teaching, and to learn about how their experience and expertise will be applied to further the goals of the CIRTL Diversity Institute.

The purpose of the Kickoff was to bring together Institute participants and lay a foundation for the Institute's activities for the coming year. At the event, diversity scholars from across the nation met to discuss the challenge of diversity and to develop a plan for working together during the institute year 2004-2005.

Richard Tapia, Noah Harding Professor of Computational and Applied Mathematics, Director of the Center for Excellence and Equality in Education and Associate Director of Graduate Studies, Rice University , launched the Institute with his keynote lecture, "A Lifetime of Diversity - Challenges, Realities and Successes."

James Stith, Vice President of Physics Resources at the American Institute of Physics, began the second day with a talk entitled, "Challenging Our Assumptions in Teaching." Stith presented case study vignettes detailing diversity issues in STEM classrooms, and then drew the audience into a conversation about the student's perspective, the instructor's perspective and what can be done to improve such situations.

Michael Nettles, Vice President, Educational Testing Service, Policy Evaluation and Research Center , in his presentation, "The Pursuit of Excellence in Diversity: A Focus Upon Preparation," discussed recent research by himself and Catherine Millett, which explores differential pre-college preparation as a mediator of racial differences in college performance.
